Don’t forget your pets this holiday season! These DIY salt dough ornaments are so so easy to customize to look exactly like your pets. We had some fun experimenting with adding color to salt dough, and are really happy with the results! We marbled in a few bright colors for fun, but you could definitely swap in browns, black, and greys to match your pets’ coloring.
Leave the baked salt dough ornaments as-is, or add extra painted details on after! Either way, we’re sure you’ll have fun whipping up these fun DIY ornaments with your furry family members!
what you need:
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
- Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint
- Ribbon
- Scissors
- Dog, cat, and/or rabbit cookie cutters
- Rolling pin
- Parchment paper
- Drinking straw
how-to:
Step 1
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and water to form a dough. Divide the mixed dough into separate bowls to make different colors – we did three. Apply a few drop of paint onto the ball of dough and knead, twist, and mix until you’re happy with the marbled pattern.
Step 2
Put the dough onto a piece of parchment paper and place another piece of parchment paper on top. Use the rolling pin to flatten it to a thickness of about 1/8″ to 1/4″.
Step 3
Cut out the animals to match your pets – you can use different colors to match your pets’ coloring or use brights like we did. Once you cut out the shape, use a straw to poke a hole and then put on a baking sheet. Preheat your oven to 325 F and bake the ornaments for about 45 minutes.
Step 4
Once baked and cooled, string ribbon through the holes and tie into loops.
Happy crafting!!
