Let me give you a little background… My studio is above our garage. The craft supplies were getting out of hand so I decided to store them in the garage below the studio. The only problem was the stained concrete and stud walls (no sheetrock). I wanted to dress up the space and make the garage more of an extension of my workspace. Basically, I needed tile, shelving, and walls.
I took a quick trip to the local Home Depot and found exactly what I needed. They had a super cool composite tile, like the kind you would find in an old elementary school. I chose white to brighten up the space, but the tile is available in a variety of other cool colors as well.
To cover the walls, I found a great up-cycled product created by Home Depot and Nike that is actually made from bits and pieces of recycled tennis shoes – the color is totally fantastic. It’s typically used as carpet padding, but I loved the little flecks of pink and orange and decided to use it on the walls. You can use it as a bulletin board to pin miscellaneous supplies (I put up clipboards to store things like extra zippers and paper supplies).
The shelving is made from particle board and 2×4’s. I painted the frame a bright yellow – it looks awesome against the white flecked tile. I found the rest of the supplies I needed at Home Depot as well, things like bins, baskets, and other storage supplies. The best part? I did it all for less than a hundred bucks!
If you want to give this weekend project a go as well, just head over to Home Depot and you’ll find everything you need. To install the tile, simply follow the instructions on the back of the tile adhesive. You can get the answers to any other questions you may have from the friendly & knowledgeable staff at Home Depot.
Happy crafting!
