I’m on holiday in the UK at the moment, enjoying a Spring break with my two youngest children Savannah and Miles. I have to say that it’s good to be home, and I’m happy to report that we seem to have brought some French sunshine with us this time!

Of course, it’s a well-known fact that the Brits like to talk about the weather, so you won’t be too surprised by today’s meteorological theme! Kids are always fascinated by weather and natural phenomena (Where does rain come from? What is thunder? How do you make a rainbow?), and their natural curiosity is a great source of inspiration for contemporary children’s toy makers.

Come rain or shine, there’s no shortage of wonderful designs out there. Here are a few of the original finds that caught my eye recently:

Rainbow Rocker

Everyone loves rainbows, especially when they’re as fun and as well-designed as this wooden plaything. Far more than a rocker, this multifunctional, multi-colored beauty is suitable for kids of all ages. It is made from birch plywood and can be used as a tunnel, a stool, a toy cradle and even a little shop. Ingenious!

Felt Cloud Wreath

Jess Quinn never ceases to amaze me. She is a true artist with a wonderful imagination and desire to explore and master all forms of creativity. Her new collection of felt wall hangings is delightful, and includes this delicately embroidered cloud girl, so perfect for a nursery or a child’s room.

Decorative Cloud Pillows
Available for $18 from Les Pommettes du Chat.

Yes, clouds are “in,” but I bet you’ve seldom seen any quite as pretty as these. Handmade in France, and available in a selection of beautiful fabrics, these pillows look fantastic grouped together on a wall or simply placed on a shelf.

Interactive UK and World Weather Maps
Available for $46 and $62 from Corby Tindersticks.

Following the success of their wonderfully creative UK weather map, British company Corby Tindersticks has just gone global with the launch of an interactive A2-size world map toy. Little ones (and big ones!) will love playing at weather forecasting using the 8 moveable felt symbols provided. A definite favorite!
