Everyone needs a cuddle and a bit of peace and quiet every now and then. We live in a fast-paced, ever-stimulating, and often stressful world, so taking time out to recharge our batteries is a necessity. It’s good to switch off once in a while!
Kids’ hideaways come in all shapes and sizes: tepees, playhouses, reading nooks—the list goes on and on and designers just keep inventing more. Here are a few of the fun products I’ve come across lately that are sure to make your little ones smile.
Whenever we go to IKEA, my son Miles invariably goes off and hides in the infamous swivel chair. He’s getting too big for it and can barely squeeze inside but I can see the appeal of pulling down the blind and shutting out the world for a few minutes. And it swivels, of course…
Soft Indoor Playground & Wicker Swing By Ola Mirecka
Via Ta. Ta.
I’m not sure if this ever got past the prototype stage but those young kids certainly seem to be having fun playing, sleeping, and hiding in Ola’s super soft cushions. Each pillow has ten buttons and loops for connection, allowing little ones to form an igloo, a cozy armor, or a mattress for an afternoon nap.
Blandito, A Transformable Lazy Pad
Via Oradaria Design
The possibilities are endless with a Blandito! Fold it, tie it up, roll in it, hide in it, twist it into a chair. Soft, malleable, and large enough for the whole family to snooze on, Blandito is made to hug, protect, and keep you cozy. Are you ready to try one?
Hammock Hideaway
Available for $149 from Nova Natural
What can be nicer than making a little nest in a tree? I love this simple, colorful hideaway hammock, which will sooth young ones (3-9 years) as it sways. Hang it outside in the summer or inside during the cooler months (attachment kit sold separately). Kids will love this retreat all year round.
Caterpillar
Available from Afilii
Isn’t this fun? Although not exactly a hideaway, its size and textile nature reminds me of the Punch N’ Cuddle toys or this dachshund furniture for kids. Big enough to jump on, play with, cuddle, and sprawl over, the concertina of cushions can also be squashed together to form a comfy seat for quiet time. Perfect for letting off some steam and catching you when you fall!
Cocoony Play Pod By Margot Stummer
via Ta. Ta.
Zip & unzip—Margot Stummer’s play pod can be transformed from a flat play mat, where children run free, to a three-dimensional pod for rest and refueling time. A vibrant, colorful safe haven that kids will love to hide in.
Pictured at the top of this post: Who do you turn to for a cuddle when mom isn’t around? Donatella Spaziani designed Big hugs from “Arthur” with her young son in mind. She wanted to create a huge doll for him to hug whenever he needed it, especially when she was traveling.
