From a dream-delivering, friendly giant to an inventor of fantastical candy (and all of the curious children in between), the characters fabricated by one of the most prominent children’s authors make it easy to see why he’s our favorite. Who is this wacky genius? You got it: Roald Dahl. Not only are we paying homage to his unmatched creativity, but we’re also celebrating his relationship with food today! Can you think of a better combo?
Ever wonder what Fizzy Lifting Drinks, Whipple-Scrumptious Sundaes, or Tummyticklers taste like? Roald Dahl’s Revolting Recipes is a compilation of treats like these, mentioned in Dahl’s books, that he had compiled before his death in 1990. His wife, Felicity, enlisted the help of her chef friends to create the recipes for the cookbook series, completing the first in 1994. It’s got everything from Willy Wonka’s Nutty Crunch Surprise (featured above), to Bunce’s Doughnuts (featured below) in Fantastic Mr. Fox. You can find these recipes and a few more from the book here.
These recipes are easy enough for kids to make themselves (with only a little help here and there), but we guarantee everyone will want to join in once they’re ready!
This bird pie from The Twits is absolutely perfect for Halloween. Stick some fake feet in there and you’re golden.
