What kid doesn’t love bright colors? Surprise your little one with this “striped” cake in fun colours, a bubbly dotted border and sprinkles galore. Nothing says “party” like a cutely decorated cake!
What You Need
- Baked and cooled cake of your choice (I made a 7 inch round vanilla cake using a cake box mix)
- Offset spatulta or butter knife
- 2 piping bags fitted with an open circle tip
- Bench scraper or an edging tool
- 4 cups of buttercream or 2 cans of frosting
- Gel coloring in fuchsia pink and leaf gree
How-To
Step One
Divide the buttercream in half. Set half of it aside; with the other half, divide into two bowls. Using the gel food colouring, mix one bowl green and the other pink.
Step Two
Start with a simple frosted cake, iced in vanilla buttercream. Fill your two piping bags fitted with the open circle tips with pink and green frosting – now, pipe little blobs of buttercream in a line up your cake, alternating colours.
Step Three
Using your offset spatula or butter knife, spread out the blobs along the cake, creating smears.
Step Four
Using your bench scraper, press the scraper directly against the cake, scraping the buttercream colours together and pulling the scraper along the exterior of the cake, creating a “striped” pattern! Pull it across the entire sides of the cake. Apply more dots of buttercream halfway through and repeat process.
Step Five
Create a streaky striped colour on the top of the cake by piping alternating coloured dots and using the bench scraper to pull the colour inward toward the center of the cake.
Step Six
Using the remaining green and pink buttercream, alternate dots along the bottom of the cake and the edge of the cake to create a bright fun border! Dust liberally with rainbow sprinkles and you’re all set!
Dig in, everybody! It’s party time! See you again soon with more cakey fun.
