In this chapter, we’ll be working on several structural finishes for our dollhouse including securing the stairs and floors, sealing the floor edges, and making an energy-efficient wood stove to warm the bedroom! Gather up some cardboard, toilet paper rolls, drinking straws, and scissors and let’s get going!

Our dollhouse structure, stairs, and first floor were temporarily attached with tape in a previous tutorial, but now we’re going to use glue instead to make it more secure.

• Hot glue gun
• Tape
• Scissors
• Ruler
• Cardboard

Step 1
Use hot glue to attach the bottom platform of the first floor stairs to the edge of the ground floor.

Step 2

Level and attach the top stairs to the first floor, and then hot glue the first floor slots and walls.

Step 3
Glue the top stairs to the first floor.

Step 4
Continue finishing the stairs by covering the front side of each step with tape, so the cardboard edge is hidden. In the same way, cover the cardboard edge of the ground floor with tape.

Step 6
Now we’ll make a cover to hide toilet paper roll pillars and geothermal heat pump in the basement. Measure the width of the front side of the house and the height from the ground to the kitchen floor.

Step 7
Cut out a rectangle of cardboard using those measurements and glue it to the bottom and front side of the house.

Step 8
Attach the top of the stairs to the edge of the kitchen floor with hot glue.

Step 9
Add the last popsicle step on top with hot glue, keeping it level with the kitchen floor.

Step 10
The main stairs are now finished!

The wood stove that we’re going to make is a lovely energy-efficient stove. It uses computer technology, gas-flow analyses and catalytic converters to reduce emissions and improve efficiency. For now, we’ll only need few materials to make one!

• Toilet paper roll
• Drinking straw
• Battery operated tealight candle
• Recycled cardboard circle (slightly bigger than the diameter of the toilet paper roll)
• Twigs
• Hot glue gun
• Craft knife
• Paint
• Black marker

Step 1
Draw and cut a small window/door (about 3/4” long and 1/2”wide) at the bottom front of the toilet paper roll, then cut three small vertical slots above it.

Step 2
Glue the cardboard circle on top of the toilet paper roll and glue the piece of straw to the back.

Step 3
Paint the outside of the toilet paper roll with white paint and the inside with orange paint. Let dry.

Step 4
Using a black marker, outline the border of the window, the top edge of the roll, and the vertical slots. Put a flameless tea light candle inside the stove.

Step 5
Collect and tie some tiny twigs as logs for your stove and place them next to it!

Turn on the flameless tea light and relax by the stove – the flickering ones add the perfect touch of warmth! We’ll be back with more tutorials for completing our eco-friendly dollhouse soon!
