We love Matisse! His cut-out work (our favorite!) came later in his career – by the late 1940’s his focus was almost entirely on making cut-outs with paper and scissors. We’ve been noticing more and more Matisse-inspired DIYs and home goods popping up recently and we are definitely happy about it. Today, we rounded up seven of our all-time favorites! On our list we’ve included both DIY projects and handmade home decor pieces that would be great in grown-up and kids’ spaces alike!
Big Canvas Art Painting With Kids by hello, Wonderful
This “big art” project for kids gives them the space to experiment and to be inspired by other artists! If you look closely, you can spot a few letters hidden in the painting too. How neat!

We love a good pop of color and this handmade rug made of cut FLOR tiles is just the ticket. This Matisse-inspired rug is a custom masterpiece!

This removable wall paper is what dreams are made of! Perfect for an accent wall, or use smaller pieces to add a DIY touch to a piece of furniture.
Hanging Art Mobile by PukaPuka
These kinetic mobiles from Australian-based PukaPuka are beautiful!! They’re actually inspired by seaweed and other oceanic shapes, but we couldn’t help but be reminded of some of Matisse’s work as well!
DIY Matisse Inspired Wall Art by the Crafted Life
Rachel made this trio of framed art using construction paper, scissors, and (our favorite!) Mod Podge. We can’t wait to try this one out for ourselves!
Painting with Scissors: Kids Study Matisse by ArtBar
We love the mix of watercolors and colored paper in this playful project!! Barbara listed keywords to inspire these little artists to make their own art in the style of Matisse. Some of the words she provided were collage, shapes, color, modern art, and painting with scissors. Great idea, right?
