The American flag is a star-spangled banner, so how about decorating for the 4th of July with a sequin-spangled wreath in red, white, and blue? Oversized printable sequins adorn this adorable ring in a display that’s easy and inexpensive to make.
For added character, you can print some of the sequins with faces on them…and some without!
The great thing about this project is that you can make it in any colors you want. Instead of a patriotic wreath, make a giant rainbow sequin wreath! Or choose pastels or tropical colors.
Ready to add some sparkle to your summer? Let’s get started!
what you need:
- Cardstock in several colors
- Scissors
- Craft knife (optional – a steak knife or scissors also work)
- Ruler
- 1/8″ hole punch with a long reach or an awl (optional)
- Adhesive dots or strips
- Large wooden embroidery hoop (12 to 18 inches)
- Printable sequin template
what you need:
Step 1
Print the sequin PDF pages on card stock. There is one page with faces on the sequins and one without faces. You may want to print out a mix. Depending on the size of the wreath you want to make, print from 4 to 8 pages in a variety of colors.
Step 2
Use a ruler and a craft knife to carefully score the sequins on the gray lines. The blade of your scissors also works for this step, as does a steak knife.
Whatever tool you choose, be careful!
Step 3
Fold the sequin on each of the scored lines. It’s easiest to do this by holding two edge sections and folding the center line as you also create the folds around the center hexagon shape.
This process can take a little practice, but once you’ve made a sequin or two, it’s pretty simple.
Step 4
Real sequins have a hole in the center, so to make these more authentic, use a long-reach hole punch or an awl to make the hole marked in the middle.
Repeat Steps 2 through 4 until you have all the sequins constructed.
Step 5
Arrange the paper sequins on the embroidery hoop, starting with a layer of the largest size and then adding more. As you work, the pieces will most likely slide around a bit, but right now the goal is just to figure out where the colors and sizes should go.
You may also find that you won’t need all the sequins you made. Don’t feel like you need to squeeze in more if you like the arrangement!
Once you create a layout you like, it helps to take a photo on your phone for reference.
Step 6
Slide the sequins off the hoop, but keep them roughly in the same spot. Apply an adhesive dot or strip to the hoop where you want to attach the first sequin. Large dots stretch like you see here.
Step 7
Press a sequin onto the adhesive and then continue adding more adhesive and sequins.
When possible, attach the sequins to the wooden hoop. Sometimes, however, it’s necessary to attach a smaller sequin to a sequin below. Small adhesive spots work well for this. You can also attach a sequin half to the hoop and half to another sequin.
When all of the giant sequins are attached, your wreath is ready for display!
You can make these wreaths in any colors you can find the cardstock for. Red, white, and blue are great for summer, but so is a rainbow of sequins!
For extra sparkle, you could even attach some real sequins or use shimmer cardstock that you find with scrapbooking supplies.
Just remember that if you want to hang this on a front door, it’s not weatherproof and is best in a protected area.
Of course, you can make other items out of these giant sequins, such as a garland or a giant mobile!
Happy crafting!
