How to Display Kids Books

If you’ve been a reader of Handmade Charlotte for a long time, you may be familiar with one of our most popular posts from a few years ago all about how to cleverly display your child’s books. This quick and simple DIY project adds another way to the list and uses materials you likely have around the house! In this tutorial, we give boring wire coat hangers a fun new look with some bright duct tape.

The thinness of the wire allows for paperback books or magazines to hang nicely over the coat hanger when you hang it on the wall. And the great thing is that by displaying your kids’ books this way, they’re not only showcased as fun art but totally accessible too for reading on a daily basis. Step 1
If you’re using a brass-colored coat hanger like this one, you might want to give it a bright new look by covering it with a layer of duct tape. We used a neon pink here and cut the duct tape into narrow widths. Attach one edge of the tape to the coat hanger and slowly roll it around the wire, keeping the tape as smooth as possible. For the curved parts, it helps to use shorter pieces of tape. Do this over the entire coat hanger.

Note: If your coat hanger is already white wire, you can skip this step!

Step 2
To make the neon pink coat hanger even more playful, we added white stripes around the entire thing. We used electrical tape here but washi or masking tape might work too! Mix and match colors and stripes until you’re happy with the look.

Step 3
Finally, give your taped coat hangers a coat of Mod Podge – this will help seal down any gummy edges of the tape. Let dry completely.

Once you have as many coat hangers as you need, decide which wall you’d like to display them and use a nail (or a jumbo gold pushpin like we did here) to hang them in place. The great thing is you can easily swap around whatever books you want, so you’ve got yourself some cheerful wall art while also being able to access the books for reading!
