Painted Pasta Monogram

Painted Pasta Monogram

Over the years, my collection of pasta shapes has grown to a size that I should probably be embarrassed of by now, but whenever I spot a cool new shape I can’t help but add it to my stash. This simple project was a fun excuse to look through the pasta I had and arrange them together in one place! The great thing about this craft is that you can use nearly any shape of pasta that you have in your kitchen (or craft!) cupboard. Spaghetti might be a bit challenging to work with, but even then I am sure there would be some really neat designs you could make.

I made just one letter here, but if you have some time on your hands (and perhaps a name that isn’t too long!) you could absolutely spell out the entire thing. The single letter would be great to hang on a door or rest on a shelf ledge. A whole name would be really fun to hang on the wall horizontally or vertically!

what you need:

  • Dried pasta noodles (various shapes)
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Spray paint
  • White glue
  • Pencil
  • Craft knife and/or scissors
  • Cutting mat
  • Ruler

how-to:

Step 1
On your piece of cardboard, use a pencil and ruler to draw out the letter you would like to make. You can do this directly onto the cardboard, or if you prefer you can also do this on a scrap of paper first to finetune the shape and then trace onto cardboard. Make the letter as big or small as you like, but keep in mind the size of the pasta noodles you’ll be using.
Step 2
Use a craft knife and scissors to cut out the letter.

Step 3
Use glue to attach the pasta to the cardboard. You can use hot glue if you prefer but beware of any little hot glue tails that may be left behind. White glue avoids this, but you’ll have to set it aside until it’s completely dry before the next step.
Step 4
Once dry, give the letter a light coat of spray paint. Follow the directions listed on your can, but generally, keep in mind that multiple light coats will give a better finish than one heavy one! The pasta noodles have lots of nooks and crannies to cover, so many light coats from multiple angles works perfectly here. Set aside to dry completely.
Step 5
If you want to hang your letter on the wall or door more permanently, you can now hot glue a piece of cord horizontally across the back of the letter so that you can hang it from a nail on the wall. Alternately, you can just use tape for short term or rest the letter on a ledge.
