In 1960, Charles Eames designed the “Nauga Monster” to promote the launch of Uniroyal’s Naugahyde brand of artificial leather (or “pleather”). The campaign humorously claimed that Naugahyde was obtained from the shed skin of an animal known as a “Nauga.”
According to the campaign, Naugas shed their skin without harm to themselves (unlike the traditional method of obtaining animal hides).
