I recently discovered just how versatile leather is. I started making bags, but I quickly moved on to explore leather jewelry. Without any expectations, I jumped in and came up with a few designs.
You can easily customize this scrap leather necklace with your favorite shapes and colors. Leather comes in so many textures and thicknesses – the possibilities are endless!
Can’t find a local source for leather? No problem! An old leather jacket or bag from a thrift store will do the trick:)
Materials
- Scrap leather (whatever color strikes your fancy)
- Paper (to use for feather template)
- Metal chain
- 5 small jump rings (one for each feather)
- Thick needle or leather punch
- Scissors
Step 1
Cut out a feather shape from a piece of paper to use as a template.
Step 2
Trace and cut out a feather from scrap leather using your paper template.
Step 3
Repeat step two four more times (you will need five feathers all together).
Step 4
Using a thick needle or leather punch, make a hole at the base of each feather.
Step 5
Cut small notches on the sides of each feather to make them look more realistic.
Step 6
Mount each feather on a small jump ring.
Step 7
Cut a 1/4-in. strip of leather 6 inches long. Punch a hole on each end to attach the chain. Next, slide each feather onto the strip of leather and attach the metal chain on each end of the leather strip.
Voliá, your new necklace is ready to wear. Happy crafting :)
