I’m so excited to share this DIY shelving project I made for my sweet baby, Valentina. For me, creating a cute and happy baby space doesn’t mean you’ve got to go traditional. I was looking for a fun and original project to add some style and spice to her room, giving it into a custom-made feel. It was important to me to find some ideas that didn’t skimp on functionality or trendiness. I knew this nursery was getting a serious makeover!

Shelves are so easily overlooked in kids rooms. We had a large wall that needed something fabulous and I wanted to create a wall of stylish storage in an area that required flexibility. That’s why I constructed a “built-in” easy floating shelving system instead of using wallpaper or installing a basic shelf. This one provides a nice contrast to the white walls of her room and is a wonderful way to add originality.

First I bought some inexpensive wooden boxes in 3 different sizes (you can find them at Home Depot).
Next, I painted the back of the boxes with different colors. I chose only three: pink pastel, grey, and white, to add a timeless and soft, girly effect. I hammered sawtooth hangers into the back of each box to attach them to the wall. You can hook the shelves together if you’d like, but I wanted to have the option of separating and rearranging them in the future.

These shelves are handsome, easy to build, and inexpensive. They’re also incredibly strong, even though they have no visible supports: they appear to float on the wall—no clunky hardware or brackets! I’m really proud of this smart little project and I know baby Valentina loves her nursery too!
