A groan is as good as a laugh, which is exactly what you might hear when you give these felt finger puppets with fruit and veggie pun Valentines! Healthier than candy, but still just as sweet, this kawaii produce is ready to bring some fun to your friends.
Each finger puppet has a matching card with a sweet and silly Valentine message. After Valentine’s Day, the puppets are fun to play with, especially when friends come together so their produce can talk or make a little puppet show! They can tell jokes or sing songs about some veggie, veggie, fruit, fruits!
And of course, you don’t have to save these only for Valentine’s Day. You could give most of these cards anytime, or simply make the finger puppets.
Ready to craft your own Valentine produce stand? Let’s get started!
what you need:
- Felt (wool blend felt is the easiest to work with)
- Scissors
- Embroidery Floss
- Needle
- Black and Pink Acrylic Paint
- Wooden Skewer
- Card Stock
- Craft Knife and Cutting Mat (optional)
- Printable finger puppet templates
- Printable Valentines
how-to:
Step 1
Download and print the Produce Pun Finger Puppet Patterns, then use them to cut out the felt pieces in colors to match the fruit and veggies. Cut two of each large fruit and vegetable pattern (including two peas), and one of each stem pattern.
Step 2
All of the finger puppets go together the same way, with one small difference for the peas, which you can see below. For the rest of them, use matching embroidery floss and hold the two layers of felt together.
Starting near the bottom, stitch around the edge of the fruit or veggie with running stitch. When you get close to the top, place the stem between the layers.
Keep stitching around the edge, and make sure you stitch through the stem. Stop stitching near the bottom. You should have a gap at the bottom that’s about 1-inch wide. This is so you can wear the felt produce as a finger puppet!
When you make the peapod finger puppet, start by stitching the two peas to the front of one pod piece. Use three strands of matching embroidery floss and running stitch. And make sure they are close to the center!
Next, stitch around the pod just like with the other puppets.
Step 3
Dip the tip of the wooden skewer into black paint and use it to make a little face. When painting on felt, you can dab the paint on and it will soak into the felt.
Dip the other end of the skewer into pink paint and make little rosy cheeks just below the eyes.
Step 4
Print the Valentine cards on cardstock and cut them apart. Use a craft knife or scissors to cut the tabs so you can slide the matching finger puppet on the cards.
Match up the fruits and veggies with their puns and then gift them for Valentines Day, or anytime you want to send a little love, produce pun style!
Want to save a little time? Instead of stitching the finger puppets together, use fabric or felt glue to put them together. Just remember to leave an opening at the bottom so they work as a puppet!
Don’t want finger puppets? Stitch all the way around the shapes and glue a pinback on the back of each fruit or veggie and give Valentine pins!
Happy crafting!
