With kids now back in school, this simple recipe for stovetop oatmeal comes in super handy for busy mornings. Hearty and delicious, kids can customize their bowls with whatever toppings are their favorite at the moment. Cinnamon, pecans, and brown sugar for a cinnamon roll style bowl, bananas, cherries and chocolate chips for a banana split oatmeal bowl, peanut butter and strawberries for a PB&J bowl … you get the idea! ingredients:
for two servings- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup milk (regular or your favorite milk alternative for a dairy-free recipe)
- 1 cup water
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon honey
- Optional toppings: sliced almonds, raisins, cranberries, nut butter, brown sugar, butter, or any chopped fresh fruit
directions:
Step 1
Combine the milk, water, salt, and cinnamon in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.
Step 2
Reduce heat to medium/low and add oats.
Step 3
Simmer uncovered for 3 to 5 minutes until thickened, stirring occasionally.
Step 4
Remove saucepan from heat and let cool slightly. Divide oatmeal into two bowls.
Step 5
Drizzle each serving with 1/2 teaspoon honey. Add any additional toppings and serve!
