Does your home have a couple of bare walls just itching for color? Would you like to own some artwork that’s vibrant and unique? If so, then today’s craft is perfect for you! You can create your very own bright and cheery works of art with melted crayons!
These pieces of art are lovely to look at and fun to make. Now you can feel like an artist and live out your secret childhood fantasy to use crayons to decorate your walls!
What You Need
- Hair dryer
- Canvas
- Brown paper bags or newspaper to cover your work area
- Paper towels
- Metal fork
- Scratch paper
- Lots and lots of crayons
Now put on your beret. Let’s get artsy!
Step 1
Sketch our your design onto a piece of paper. You’ll use this as a general guideline for your artwork.
Step 2
Sketch out the design onto your canvas.
Step 3
Peel your crayons. (The amount of wrapper that you will remove will depend on whether you want to cover a large or small area with color.) Cover your work area because the melted wax can splatter.
Step 4
Turn on your hair dryer and blow it onto the crayon. As the hot air melts the wax, it will get easier and easier to draw on the canvas. Don’t press too hard on the crayon or else it will break. If you feel the crayon getting too soft to work with, move your hair dryer farther away.
Step 5
To color in the larger areas, try the fork technique. Break the crayon in half and peel off the entire wrapper. Then use a fork to hold down the crayon as you blow it with hot air. If you feel the crayon rolling away, turn the hot air away from the crayon. Then secure it again under your fork before continuing.
NOTE: To ensure that your colors don’t unintentionally mix, clean your fork. Place the fork on a paper towel far away from your artwork. Then, turn on the hair dryer. The hot air will melt the wax right off. It will spatter, so be careful!
Here’s what the finished pieces of artwork look like close up. You’re going to have lots of fun creating some vibrant big-kid artwork.
Happy crafting!
