It’s almost Cinco de Mayo! Do you do anything to celebrate? I usually have some friends over and make a big pot of chili. Other years I’ve made piñatas to decorate, but we don’t have a great spot to hang and smash them, so this year I opted to make this mini sombrero garland instead!
I love the look of vintage miniature sombreros – they come in beautiful bright colors and are decorated with sequins. I used those as inspiration when dressing up these simple straw doll hats. You could even decorate the hats with your party guests as an activity, and then hang as a garland!
What You Need
- Small straw doll hats
- Spray paint
- Scissors
- Colored string/cord
- Hot glue gun
- Mini pom poms, beads, sequins, stickers, etc
How-To
Step 1
Spray paint your straw hats and let dry. I used bright yellow and fluorescent pink.
Step 2
Decorate your hats to look like sombreros! Use the stickers, cord, pom poms, sequins, and beads to transform the doll hats – I looked at images of mini vintage sombreros for inspiration.
Step 3
Repeat!
Step 4
Use the hot glue gun to attach the back of the sombreros onto a cord, making a garland. Hang up and you’re all set for your Cinco de Mayo fiesta!
Happy crafting :)
